It would be easy to drive right by Gatherings Kitchen in Lakewood. Nestled between several other small storefronts on a busy crosstown street, it’s nondescript until you take one step through its front doors. Suddenly you’re transported to a magical place where artful cooking, stupendous dishes, and happy—one might even call them downright festive—gatherings take place. Hence, the name.
Gatherings Kitchen is several things: a collaborative catering company, a venue for cooking classes, a private chef service, and a place to hold events or luncheons. Owner Ruth Kostadinov came up with the concept for her venture after working in advertising and then as the student services director at the Loretta Paganini School of Cooking.
She eventually joined forces with chef and business partner Doug Zimmer to open Gatherings Kitchen. Today, only four short years later, it has made quite a name for itself and is easily exceeding their expectations.
Their full-service catering business attracts many discerning clients, both private and corporate. Their ever-popular, always-sold-out Supper Club—where guests prepare and then eat a meal—takes takes place on site every Friday night with a monthly rotating menu based on a novel theme and seasonal ingredients. Their Prep School is a four-week series that teaches basic cooking techniques to the serious foodie. And their Kids Cooking Camp teaches youngsters how to have fun in the kitchen during one-week summer sessions.
